Resources

To celebrate British Science Week 2025, we have created a free resource pack for schools in the UK and Ireland.

The activity combines science and crafting to introduce students to the concept of protein synthesis in an accessible way. The pack includes briefing notes for teachers, a short PowerPoint presentation, and instructions for a ‘code-cracking’ activity to enable students to take on the role of a ribosome and make a ‘protein’ paper chain themselves (this represents the process of making proteins from a DNA code).

Our goal is to inspire a love of science! Through the activity, students will be introduced to DNA, RNA, amino acids, ribosomes and the process of protein synthesis. While the content is likely to be new, we hope that students will gain a basic understanding of
how our bodies make proteins – all while having fun!

The activity is designed for ages 7-11 (typically KS2/Second to Fifth Class/P4-7), with adaptations for younger and older students within this age range.
